A side table is not a key element in your living space but it adds to the aesthetic and function of the room. In fact, it is a bit difficult to choose the right side table for your living room as there are different models available in the market. Consider the following tips to decide on the perfect side table for your seating area.
1. Understand the purpose of your side table
First, think about whether you want to place items on the side table or use it only for visual interest. You can place your side table in a casual setting next to a couch or an armchair to ensure that coffee is within easy reach, or in a formal setting as part of a timeless piece of furniture just for show. But if you are planning to store things in, then your side table might need a drawer.
2. Decide on the style of your side table
Make sure you choose a style that matches with the style of the room. If you want to position your side table in a formal setting, then you need to choose a fancy table with high-end finishing. You can either choose similar side tables to bring symmetry to the room, or different models for added contrast and visual interest. Choose a kid-friendly side table that is free of sharp edges if you have kids or domestic pets in the house.
3. Decide on the materials of your side table
Side tables come in different materials. Opt for wicker and rattan if you want to pull out a bohemian interior style. Select a side table with a glass top to make your room look bigger and brighter. Wood tables and marble tables are great options for they’re sturdy and can withstand food and drinks. You can also choose an upholstered ottoman, which acts as both a side table and an extra seating surface. You can even mix and match materials to show off originality and uniqueness. Glass tables for instance are trendy to use with contemporary metallic legs.
4. Choose the right size
First, consider the space where your side table will fit into and think about what you will put on its top surface. Ideally, the size of your side should be two-thirds the length of the sofa and should be about 3 inches below the arm of the sofa or the chair. Make sure that your side table balances well with the rest of the furniture to avoid making the room look disproportionate. If the space near the sofa is small, then stacking tables is a solution to expand the usable area.
