How to Baby-proof Your House Without Compromising Style

Preparing for the arrival of your baby is exciting and stressful all at once. Obviously, creating a safe home for your kid should be your top priority. Follow the tips below to create a kid-friendly environment without sacrificing style and design.

1. Clear clutter

One way to protect the child from unwanted clutter is by hiding them away. The best thing to do is to use furniture with a lot of storage spaces. You can use a dresser as a diaper-changing table, or a crib with a trundle or drawers underneath to store toys and clothes. Baskets are also a good option for storage.

2. Move items to higher shelves

Babies and toddlers like to touch everything along their way. Therefore, it is important to place hazardous items such as medication and detergent out of their reach. Build high cabinets and high mounted shelves to prevent your kids from grasping dangerous objects, or simply lock down your drawers and cabinets with safety locks.

3. Replace sharp furniture

Make sure to get rid of elements that can topple and break. You better select chunky furniture that is hard to move. Remove tables with sharp edges and replace them with round ones. You can even use upholstery rather than hard materials. An upholstered ottoman can be used as a coffee table to avoid kids’ injuries.

4. Choose resilient fabrics

Dirty little fingers will find their way onto every surface in the house. Therefore, it is important to select stain-resistant fabrics such as leather, ultra-suede and easily cleanable surfaces such as wood.

5. Use forgiving rugs

When it comes to floor coverings, do not seek high-maintenance fabrics such as silks and viscose. Instead, look for forgiving rugs with prints and patterns so that they can hide spills and stains better than solid rugs. Persian rugs are always a good idea, for they are durable and stylish.
